Concerns Over Dr. Abu Safiye's Potential Execution: Medical Personnel Arrested in Gaza
The General Director of Gaza’s Ministry of Health, Dr. Munir El-Bersh, expressed concerns that Israeli occupation forces may execute Dr. Hasan Abu Safiye, the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, after denying the existence of any detainee by that name. El-Bersh, in an interview with Al Jazeera, stated that the Israeli forces refused to disclose Dr. Abu Safiye's whereabouts in response to an official request made by the Ministry of Health through Physicians for Human Rights. He also pointed out that the occupation celebrates its arrests of Kamal Adwan Hospital’s staff through photos of detained personnel.
Israeli forces published a video showing the moment they raided Kamal Adwan Hospital, documenting the arrest of Dr. Abu Safiye, the medical staff, and patients after setting the hospital on fire. According to CNN, Palestinian detainees recently released by the Israeli army stated that Dr. Abu Safiye is held in the notorious Sde Taiman Military Base, though Dr. Abu Safiye’s son later denied these reports, confirming that they still do not know his father’s location.
El-Bersh revealed earlier that Dr. Abu Safiye was brutally beaten by Israeli forces, forced to strip off his clothes, and dressed in prisoner garb. He also stated that the occupation used him as a human shield.
On December 27, Israeli forces raided Kamal Adwan Hospital, set it on fire, and rendered it inoperable. More than 350 individuals were detained inside the hospital, including 180 medical staff and 75 patients and their attendants, and were taken to an unknown location.
International and human rights organizations called for the immediate release of Dr. Abu Safiye and his medical team. UN experts reported that the Israeli army has killed over 1,057 medical personnel and arrested many others without due process.
Haaretz reported that the closure of Kamal Adwan Hospital is part of an Israeli strategy aimed at emptying northern Gaza of civilians. The Israeli army confirmed that they will not allow the hospital to reopen.
