Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Sunday, May 11, 2025, that he is ready to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Istanbul next Thursday, May 16, as part of a direct negotiation effort aimed at ending the ongoing war in Ukraine.

The announcement follows an invitation from the Russian president for unconditional talks. Turkey has welcomed the initiative, with the Turkish Presidency confirming its readiness to host the high-level meeting in Istanbul, underlining its significance for promoting peace and stability in the region.

As part of the preparations for the summit, President Zelensky called for a full ceasefire starting Monday, May 12, stating that a halt in hostilities is essential to create a conducive environment for the negotiations.

Meanwhile, former U.S. President Donald Trump urged Ukraine to accept Putin’s proposal immediately, suggesting that the talks could mark the beginning of an end to what he described as a “bloodbath” in the region.

Despite growing optimism surrounding the announcement, the success of the talks remains contingent on both parties honoring the ceasefire and demonstrating genuine commitment to reaching a comprehensive political settlement.
