IOM Denies Involvement in Saada Migrant Center, Holds Houthis Accountable for Tragedy
International Organization for Migration (IOM) has denied any affiliation with the migrant shelter in Saada, northern Yemen, which was recently struck by U.S. airstrikes resulting in numerous casualties.
In a statement, IOM expressed profound sorrow over reports of tragic loss of life in Saada, noting that many migrants are believed to have been killed or injured. The organization clarified that it was not operating in the facility but is closely monitoring the situation and stands ready to provide support as needed. IOM emphasized the importance of prioritizing the protection of civilians.
Contrary to claims by the Houthi-controlled Ministry of Interior, which stated that the detention center was under the supervision of IOM and the International Committee of the Red Cross, both organizations have denied such involvement
The airstrike, which occurred at 05:00 local time on April 28, 2025, targeted a facility reportedly housing around 115 undocumented African migrants, primarily Ethiopians and Somalis. The attack resulted in at least 68 deaths and 47 injuries.
