UN Envoy: Total Collapse of Trust in Yemen… 2023 Roadmap No Longer Viable
UN Special Envoy to Yemen Hans Grundberg acknowledged that the political process in Yemen is facing a profound crisis marked by a “complete erosion of trust.” Speaking during the “Yemen at a Crossroads” session at the 23rd Doha Forum, Grundberg stated that the optimism present in September 2023 has significantly faded, adding that the roadmap he presented at the time is no longer applicable in its previous form.
Grundberg emphasized that the greatest damage Yemen has witnessed over the past two and a half years is the “total erosion of trust,” noting that confidence among Yemeni parties, regional actors, and the international community has dropped to “the lowest level ever” for any potential resolution.
He explained that the current situation differs fundamentally from that of September 2023, stressing that any future settlement must be built on “measurable and verifiable” foundations.
The UN envoy also warned the international community against viewing Yemen solely through a security lens, insisting that international engagement should not be limited to “proxy warfare, terrorism, or Red Sea insecurity.” Instead, he called for a comprehensive and inclusive approach.
Grundberg concluded by reaffirming a core principle: the Yemeni crisis cannot be resolved except by the Yemenis themselves, stressing that Yemen’s complexity requires deep understanding.
This marks the first time the UN envoy openly admits that the previously defended roadmap is no longer viable in its original form.
"What is happening in Yemen? What caused the war? And who ignited it?
