Sovereign Decision in Yemen: UAE Ends Its Military Presence Following Cancellation of Joint Defense Agreement
The United Arab Emirates Ministry of Defense announced on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, the voluntary withdrawal of the remaining Emirati counterterrorism forces from Yemen, ensuring the safety of its personnel and in coordination with relevant international partners.
The announcement followed an earlier decision issued the same day by Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council Chairman and Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, Dr. Rashad Al-Alimi, canceling the Joint Defense Agreement with the UAE and ordering the complete withdrawal of all Emirati forces from Yemeni territory within 24 hours.
Emirati forces had been stationed at several strategic locations, including the Balhaf Gas Facility in Shabwa, Abd al-Kuri Island in the Socotra Archipelago, Mayyun (Perim) Island in the Bab al-Mandab Strait, Zuqar Island in the Red Sea, and Riyan Airport in Mukalla, Hadramout.
