UN Office Holds Three-Day Meeting in Amman to Strengthen Peace Efforts in Yemen
The United Nations Special Envoy for Yemen’s Office held a meeting last week with representatives of the Yemeni government under the framework of the Military Coordination Committee in Amman, Jordan. The three-day discussions focused on planning processes for ceasefire agreements and transitional security arrangements.
From December 10 to 12, participants reviewed global ceasefire models and explored how they could be implemented in Yemen’s unique context. The discussions provided a critical platform for exchanging views on various types of ceasefires, design processes, and relevant negotiation mechanisms. Participants also received briefings on options for ceasefire monitoring, verification, and oversight, as well as lessons learned from previous truce experiences.
Hans Grundberg, the UN Special Envoy for Yemen, emphasized the importance of such initiatives in rebuilding trust and moving toward a sustainable resolution to the conflict. “Meetings like these create the necessary conditions for achieving lasting peace in Yemen,” he stated.
Anthony Hayward, the UN Special Envoy’s Senior Military Advisor, highlighted the significance of exchanging knowledge on global ceasefire models while addressing Yemen’s specific needs. He noted that effective preparation and planning for ceasefires represent a vital step toward ensuring peace and stability in the country.
The discussions were facilitated by a team of international experts specializing in ceasefire agreements, forming part of a series of meetings aimed at advancing Yemen’s peace efforts.
