China and Saudi Arabia Discuss Energy Cooperation to Support Yemen
China’s Acting Ambassador to Yemen, Shao Zheng, announced that China and Saudi Arabia are in talks to address Yemen’s severe electricity shortage, with Chinese companies expressing interest in joining Saudi firms in energy projects.
Speaking after a five-day visit to Aden, Zheng said the trip strengthened the traditional friendship between China and Yemen. He highlighted plans to leverage Saudi Arabia’s experience in building the world’s largest solar power plant — with a capacity of 2.6 gigawatts — to harness Yemen’s abundant solar energy potential.
Zheng praised Saudi Arabia’s constructive role in Yemen’s peace process, emphasizing its historic ties with the country. He noted that Saudi companies are already working on electricity projects in Taiz, and that Chinese firms are eager to participate in these efforts.
The Chinese diplomat stressed China’s readiness to cooperate with Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries to promote peace and development in Yemen. Ongoing projects include the Prince Mohammed bin Salman Hospital in Aden, the Hodeidah–Sana’a road, and the “Chinese Bridge” initiative.
