WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus Survives Israeli Airstrike on Sana’a Airport
Israeli Airstrike Hits Sana’a Airport: Two Dead, One Injured Among UN Team
World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus narrowly escaped an Israeli airstrike targeting Sana’a International Airport on Thursday. The attack occurred as Tedros and a UN delegation were preparing to depart following a visit to the city. One crew member was injured in the assault, while at least two people lost their lives.
In a post on the social media platform X, Tedros explained that the strike happened just as his team was about to board their plane. The attack caused severe damage to airport facilities, including the air traffic control tower, the departure hall, and
the runway.
Tedros confirmed that his delegation was safe but expressed his heartfelt condolences to the families of those who lost loved ones in the attack. He added that their departure was delayed due to the extensive damage inflicted on the airport, which requires repairs before flights can resume.
Tedros’ mission to Yemen was aimed at negotiating the release of detained UN staff members and assessing the country’s dire health and humanitarian situation.
The same day, Israeli forces carried out additional airstrikes on Sana’a Airport and Hudaydah Port, resulting in civilian casualties and injuries. The strikes caused widespread destruction to airport facilities and the surrounding infrastructure.
