Egypt Approves Temporary Reopening of Community Schools and Sets Conditions for 2025
The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced its approval to temporarily reopen the community school in Cairo until the end of the 2024-2025 academic year. It was also stated that other schools would open the following year, subject to specific conditions.
This announcement followed a meeting between Egypt's Assistant Foreign Minister for Arab Affairs, Ambassador Ihab Fahmy, and the Yemeni Ambassador in Cairo, Khaled Bahah. Egyptian officials confirmed that the school would reopen temporarily, with safety measures to be followed, and that a list of private Egyptian schools would be provided to accommodate Yemeni students until the end of the current academic year.
Additionally, Egypt confirmed its readiness to accept Yemeni students into all types of Egyptian schools starting next year, until the required conditions for opening community schools are met.
For the 2025-2026 academic year, a list of conditions for opening foreign community schools in Egypt was handed over, which includes obtaining approvals from both the Yemeni Ministries of Education and Foreign Affairs, as well as approval from the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The school must also meet the required standards for the building and have its curriculum reviewed by the relevant Egyptian authorities.
It is worth noting that last October, Egyptian authorities closed 15 Yemeni schools and other Arab community schools for not having the necessary licenses, which affected around 6,000 students who were unable to complete the first semester of the current academic year.
