Yemen Air Defense Downs Houthi Drone Attack Amid Rising Military Tensions in Marib

The Yemeni Armed Forces Media Center announced that the country’s air defense successfully downed an attacking drone launched by the Iran-backed Houthi militia, targeting military positions in the Al-Kassara front, northwest of Marib Governorate.

This incident comes amid a continuous escalation in military operations by the Houthi militia in Marib throughout this month. Intense clashes have taken place across multiple fronts in the governorate, resulting in significant casualties and material losses for the Houthis.

In a related development, the Yemeni government warned about the dangers of the Houthi military escalation, emphasizing that these actions undermine peace prospects and threaten regional security. Yemen’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Abdullah Al-Saadi, addressed the UN Security Council, stating that the Houthi military escalation is an evasion of peace commitments and an obstruction to international efforts to end the war in Yemen.

UN Special Envoy to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, has intensified his diplomatic efforts in the region, aiming to de-escalate the situation and advance the peace process. His diplomatic tour included meetings with senior officials in Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Oman (Sanaa).

Grundberg reiterated the need for immediate de-escalation and serious engagement in peace efforts during his briefing to the UN Security Council.

It is important to note that Marib, an oil-rich governorate, is a critical stronghold for the Yemeni government and a shelter for hundreds of thousands of displaced people who have fled conflict zones in other parts of Yemen. The ongoing military escalation in Marib directly threatens these civilians and exacerbates the country’s humanitarian crisis.
