Israel Intercepts Missile Fired from Yemen Following Strikes on Houthi Ports
The Israeli army announced early Sunday that it had intercepted a missile launched from Yemen, just a day after Israel carried out airstrikes targeting two key ports under Houthi control—Hudaydah and Salif.
In a statement, the Israeli military said: “Air defense systems successfully intercepted a missile launched from Yemen.” The statement also confirmed the activation of air raid sirens in several regions across the country. Footage circulating on social media showed the moment the missile was intercepted mid-air.
On Friday, the Israeli military announced that it had struck "military infrastructure" linked to Iran-backed Houthi rebels at both ports, as part of ongoing operations responding to attacks launched from Yemen.
Since the outbreak of the war in Gaza in October 2023, the Houthis have launched repeated missile and drone attacks toward Israeli territory in support of Hamas. Israel has responded with targeted airstrikes on Houthi sites in Yemen.
The Houthis have also escalated attacks on commercial ships linked to the United States and the United Kingdom. In response, the U.S. launched a wave of airstrikes against Houthi targets in March 2024. However, former President Donald Trump announced a halt to these strikes in recent weeks, with reports of a ceasefire agreement brokered by Oman.
While the Houthis have expressed willingness to uphold a ceasefire with the United States, their hostility toward Israel remains explicit and ongoing.
In response, an Israeli security official stressed that Israel is not party to any deal with the Houthis and will continue to target their positions in Yemen when necessary.
