Ali Erbaş Calls the Adhan in Cairo’s Grand Mosque: A Historic Spiritual Moment Between Egypt and Turkey
In a powerful display of Islamic unity, Turkey’s President of Religious Affairs, Dr. Ali Erbaş, recited the adhan (call to prayer) at the Grand Egypt Mosque in Cairo’s New Administrative Capital during his first official visit to Egypt.
The moment, captured and shared by Egypt’s Minister of Endowments, Dr. Osama Al-Azhari, quickly gained traction on social media, with many describing it as a "historic spiritual scene" reflecting the deepening ties between Egypt and Turkey.
As part of the visit, Dr. Al-Azhari led Dr. Erbaş on a tour of the mosque’s House of the Holy Qur’an, home to uniquely designed halls where the entire Qur’an is engraved in marble. Deeply moved, Erbaş described the site as "an extraordinary Islamic monument and one of the most important in the world."
He expressed gratitude to Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi for overseeing the creation of such a majestic religious complex, urging Muslims worldwide — especially in Turkey — to visit and witness "this priceless beauty."
Erbaş also reflected on the spiritual significance of Egypt and Sinai as mentioned in the divine scriptures, highlighting their historical and cultural weight in Islamic civilization.
The Turkish delegation concluded their visit with a tour of several Egyptian heritage sites, and a formal invitation was extended to the Egyptian Minister to visit Turkey soon, in a continued effort to strengthen cultural and religious cooperation.
The Grand Egypt Mosque, inaugurated in 2019, is Egypt’s largest mosque and one of the region’s most ambitious religious projects. Spanning over 250 acres, it features the world’s first Qur’an House with the full Qur’an engraved in marble.
Dr. Ali Erbaş, who has led Turkey’s Religious Affairs since 2017, is known for his soulful voice, having previously recited the adhan at Hagia Sophia in Istanbul (2020) and the Muradiye Mosque in Bulgaria (2021).
