Saudi Foreign Minister Leads Prayer at Umayyad Mosque in Damascus: A Symbolic Gesture of Spiritual and Historic Ties
In a symbolic moment highlighting deep religious and historical ties, Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan led congregational prayers at the Umayyad Grand Mosque in Damascus on Saturday, during his official visit to Syria.

Images and videos shared by media outlets showed the Saudi minister standing at the front of one of the most revered mosques in the Islamic world, joined by Syrian officials and members of the accompanying Saudi delegation. Observers described the gesture as more than ceremonial, carrying a message of openness and deep-rooted spiritual and cultural connection between Saudi Arabia and Syria.

Prince Faisal’s visit includes high-level meetings with Syrian leadership, headed by current administration leader Ahmad Al-Sharaa, and economic consultations between the Saudi delegation and their Syrian counterparts to explore ways to support Syria’s economy and enhance bilateral cooperation.

The Umayyad Mosque, one of the holiest Islamic sites in the Levant, holds deep significance for Muslims. Prince Faisal’s participation in prayer there marks the first such visit by a senior Saudi official in over a decade, adding a profound layer to the diplomatic gesture.
