Yemeni Government Expresses Regret Over U.S. Travel Ban on Its Citizens

The Yemeni government expressed deep regret and serious concern on Thursday over the recent decision by the U.S. administration to restrict entry of Yemeni nationals into the United States, as part of a broader policy affecting citizens from 12 countries. The decision is set to take effect on Monday, June 9, 2025.

In an official statement, the government warned that the move would negatively affect thousands of Yemenis, including students, researchers, and families who have abided by U.S. laws and contributed positively to academic and social life.

While reaffirming its respect for U.S. sovereignty and national security, the government urged Washington to distinguish between genuine security threats and law-abiding Yemeni citizens, many of whom maintain legal and humanitarian ties with the United States.

The statement emphasized Yemen’s appreciation of the historic bilateral relations and its strategic partnership with the U.S., particularly in areas of counterterrorism, regional security, and international stability—especially in light of the ongoing threat posed by the Iran-backed Houthi militia.

The Yemeni government called on the U.S. administration to reconsider the decision and grant an exemption for Yemeni nationals, citing the country’s dire circumstances and alignment with American values of human rights and justice.

The government concluded by reaffirming its commitment to continued security cooperation with U.S. agencies and to enhancing verification and vetting procedures, in order to maintain high safety standards and preserve academic and humanitarian ties.
