Al-Alimi Threatens Resignation Amid Political Tensions, Oil Smuggling Scandal Unfolds
New details have emerged about the tense virtual meeting held between Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council Chairman Rashad al-Alimi and leaders of major political parties, highlighting growing fractures within the council and the government's faltering performance.

According to Belqees TV, Al-Alimi harshly criticized members of the council for repeatedly being absent from the country while continuing to receive full financial benefits. He blamed their inaction for stalling the council’s work.

Responding to allegations made by the political office of Brigadier General Tareq Saleh, Al-Alimi denied any internal power struggles, insisting his decisions fall fully within the scope of his presidential authority.

In a striking revelation, Al-Alimi exposed an ongoing oil smuggling operation from Shabwa to Hadramawt, indirectly implicating members of the Southern Transitional Council and other UAE-backed figures.

During the 2.5-hour meeting, Al-Alimi threatened to resign if pressure to paralyze the council continued or if opposition to his economic reform plan persisted. His plan includes raising the customs exchange rate and fuel prices as part of emergency fiscal measures.

Political party representatives pushed back, demanding broader participation in shaping economic policy and criticized Al-Alimi’s recent appointments as unilateral and lacking geographic fairness.

The parties and the leadership agreed to form a joint economic committee tasked with preparing a comprehensive recovery roadmap. However, the proposal to raise the customs exchange rate was firmly rejected by the political parties.

In remarks carried by the official Saba News Agency, Al-Alimi stressed the need for continued national partnership, noting that the core of Yemen’s economic crisis lies in the halt of oil exports due to Houthi attacks, which has crippled the government’s ability to pay salaries and maintain basic services.
