Houthis Ignore Hamas' Call for Global Day of Rage Against Gaza Starvation, Hold Sectarian Event in Sana’a
The Iran-backed Houthi militia in Yemen ignored a call by Hamas to mark a global day of rage on Sunday, July 14, in protest of Israel’s starvation tactics and genocide in Gaza, opting instead to hold a sectarian commemoration for the death of Imam Zayd in Sana’a.

In its July 13 statement, Hamas urged Arab and Islamic nations to join massive protests against the siege on Gaza, where at least 700 civilians, including dozens of children, have reportedly died of starvation since October 7, 2023, according to UN reports.

Despite regularly organizing pro-Gaza demonstrations every Friday, the Houthis did not respond to this particular call. Instead, hundreds of their supporters gathered at Al-Sabeen Square in Sana’a to mark a religious anniversary.

While the humanitarian crisis in Gaza worsens, the Houthi authorities continue to exploit state-run media and communication networks to promote their own sectarian agendas. Government employees and students are often forced to attend these rallies, where slogans are raised in support of Iran and Houthi leader Abdul-Malik al-Houthi.

Hamas stressed that only a global grassroots movement can stop Israel’s starvation policy, calling for increased political, diplomatic, and public pressure.
