Yemeni Parliament Slams Southern Transitional Council Over Obstruction in Mukalla
The Yemeni Parliament has launched a scathing attack on the Southern Transitional Council (STC), accusing its affiliates of obstructing a parliamentary oversight committee in the city of Mukalla, Hadramawt. The parliament described the incident as a dangerous act that fosters chaos, weakens state authority, and hinders anti-corruption efforts.
In a statement issued after a virtual meeting held on July 23–24, 2025, between the Parliamentary Presidency Board and bloc leaders, lawmakers said that STC-aligned groups forced the committee to leave its hotel under threat of force, amid the silence of local authorities who failed to provide any protection.
As a result, Parliament suspended its planned missions to Aden and Taiz, placing full responsibility on the Hadramawt local authority and condemning the attack as a flagrant violation of the constitution and laws of the country.
The Parliament also criticized Prime Minister-designate Salem Bin Bureik for failing to issue directives to government bodies to cooperate with parliamentary committees, despite previous agreements with Presidential Leadership Council chairman Dr. Rashad Al-Alimi.
Lawmakers reiterated their commitment to convene in Aden, emphasizing that reactivating the legislative body is essential to fight corruption and preserve what remains of the state. They called on the Presidential Council to enable Parliament’s regular sessions and push the government to submit its budget and financial reports immediately.
