Saudi Arabia Places Hadhramaut Governor Under House Arrest Amid Rising Public Anger
Saudi authorities have reportedly placed Hadhramaut Governor Mabkhout bin Madi under house arrest and barred him from returning to the province, signaling a likely dismissal, according to the "Min Al-Akher" program aired on Yemen Shabab TV.
The decision comes in response to Bin Madi's perceived alignment with the UAE and the Southern Transitional Council (STC), particularly after he opposed the deployment of the Saudi-backed "Shield of the Nation" forces into Mukalla and coordinated with Abu Dhabi-aligned actors.
The program reported that Saudi Arabia has already begun reviewing a list of potential replacements. Candidates include key figures from the General People's Congress party and individuals close to the STC. Among the top names are Abdul Salam Baaboud, Badr Basalma, Saleh Aroom, Issam Bin Hubreish, Akram Bansib Al-Ameri, and the prominent politician Salem Al-Khanbashi, who reportedly enjoys the support of Presidential Leadership Council head Rashad Al-Alimi.
This development comes amid growing public discontent in Hadhramaut due to deteriorating public services, especially electricity, alongside escalating regional rivalry between Saudi Arabia and the UAE over influence in Yemen’s eastern provinces.
