United States Condemns Houthi Terrorist Campaign Against UN Employees in Yemen
The United States has condemned the Houthi militia's terrorist campaign against United Nations employees in Yemen, reaffirming its strong support for UN efforts to address these violations.

A statement from the U.S. Department of State's spokesperson condemned the illegal actions of the Houthis, who forcibly detained additional United Nations employees in Yemen on January 23. The statement emphasized that these actions are part of the Houthis' ongoing terrorist campaign, which includes the detention of hundreds of United Nations staff, humanitarian organization workers, and diplomats, including dozens of current and former employees of the Yemeni government working with the U.S

The statement also reiterated the U.S. government's full support for the UN Secretary-General and all UN efforts to secure the immediate and unconditional release of all detainees held by the Houthis. It pointed out that this latest round of Houthi detentions reveals the militia's true intentions, undermining their claims of seeking de-escalation and disregarding their claims to represent the interests of the Yemeni people.

The statement also condemned the Houthis' failure to adhere to the cessation of attacks on regional countries, U.S. service personnel, and all maritime traffic in the Red Sea and surrounding waterways, in accordance with United Nations Security Council resolutions.

The statement concluded by noting that the executive order issued by President Biden to designate the Houthis as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) reflects these facts and underscores the accountability of the group for their reckless actions and attacks.

In recent days, Houthi militias have launched new campaigns targeting United Nations employees, kidnapping several of them.
