U.S. Intensifies Airstrikes on Houthi Targets in Yemen Amid Escalating Red Sea Tensions
The United States has significantly escalated its military campaign against Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen, conducting a series of airstrikes targeting key positions across multiple provinces. This intensified offensive, part of "Operation Rough Rider" initiated in mid-March 2025, aims to dismantle the Houthis' capabilities to threaten international maritime routes in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.

Recent operations have seen U.S. forces targeting areas in the provinces of Al Mahwit, Al Hudaydah, Saada, and Sana'a. Notably, strikes have focused on missile storage facilities, command and control centers, and drone launch sites. These actions are in direct response to the Houthis' continued attacks on commercial shipping lanes, which have disrupted global trade and posed significant risks to maritime security.

However, the campaign has raised concerns over civilian casualties. A notable incident involved a strike on the Ras Isa fuel terminal, resulting in over 70 fatalities. U.S. Central Command has stated that the targeted facilities were being used by the Houthis to fund and facilitate their military operations.

The Houthis have retaliated by shooting down several U.S. MQ-9 Reaper drones, each valued at approximately $30 million, marking a significant loss for the Pentagon. Despite these setbacks, the U.S. remains committed to its objective of neutralizing the Houthi threat and ensuring the safety of international shipping routes.
