US Reaffirms Sanctions Against Houthis: “We Will Not Tolerate Fuel Smuggling to a Terrorist Organization”

The United States has reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing sanctions against Yemen’s Houthi militia and their financial backers, aiming to disrupt all illicit revenue streams used to destabilize the region.

This came in a strong statement by Dorothy Shea, the Acting U.S. Representative to the United Nations, during a UN Security Council session on Yemen held Wednesday evening.

Shea declared:

“The U.S. will not tolerate the smuggling of fuel or war materials to a designated terrorist organization,” emphasizing continued efforts to target the Houthis’ illicit funding networks and impose full-scale sanctions on involved individuals and entities.

Precision Strikes and Disrupted Logistics

She pointed out that the U.S. had recently carried out precision strikes that disrupted the infrastructure supporting Houthi fuel imports, which in turn fuels their terrorist agenda.

Clear Warning to Supporters

Shea warned that providing material support to a designated terrorist group is a violation of U.S. law, signaling that foreign entities aiding the Houthis could face sanctions.

Iran Accused of Violating UN Resolutions

The American diplomat also accused Iran of breaching UN Resolution 2216 by providing the Houthis with military, logistical, and intelligence support, urging for additional sanctions against violators.

Call to Support UNVIM

Finally, Shea called on UN member states to financially support the UN Verification and Inspection Mechanism (UNVIM), to ensure the interception of suspicious vessels potentially smuggling arms to the Houthis.
