Al-Eryani: Houthis Turn Yemen into a New Captagon Hub with Iranian Backing
Yemeni Minister of Information Moammar Al-Eryani has warned of the increasing criminal activities by the Iran-backed Houthi militia, describing it as part of a “dirty war” that uses drug trafficking to destabilize Yemen and the broader region.
In a statement on Sunday, Al-Eryani said security authorities recently uncovered a Captagon production facility in Al-Mahwit province, allegedly established with Iranian funding and support, marking a new chapter in the Houthis’ illicit operations after the collapse of the Syrian drug network.
He explained that the Houthis have repurposed civilian pharmaceutical facilities in Sana’a into drug labs, turning Yemen into an alternative hub for Captagon production following the destruction of factories in Syria's Douma.
Al-Eryani stressed that large quantities of drugs have been intercepted en route to Saudi Arabia in recent months, proving the ability of Yemeni government forces to combat smuggling and disrupt Iranian funding networks.
He called on the international community to recognize that the Houthi threat now extends beyond drones and missiles, posing a serious risk to the social fabric of Gulf and Arab nations through narcotics.
Al-Eryani concluded by urging a firm international response to dry up the Houthis' sources of funding and support the legitimate government’s efforts to restore control over all Yemeni territories.
"What is happening in Yemen? What caused the war? And who ignited it?
