Houthis Claim to Have Shot Down a U.S. MQ-9 Drone in Marib
The Houthi military spokesperson, Yahya Saree, claimed that the group successfully shot down a U.S.-made MQ-9 drone today in the skies over Marib.
In a statement, Saree said, "Our air defenses managed to down the drone while it was carrying out hostile missions." He noted that the operation was carried out using a domestically-manufactured surface-to-air missile. Saree also mentioned that this is the second drone shot down in the past 72 hours and the 14th since the start of the so-called "Promised Conquest" and "Sacred Jihad" in support of Gaza.
A few days ago, the Houthis also announced the downing of another U.S. MQ-9 drone in Al-Bayda governorate, marking the 13th drone shot down since November 2023.
These events follow an announcement by the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) regarding airstrikes on Houthi targets in Yemen’s capital, Sanaa. The U.S. confirmed precision strikes targeting Houthi-controlled command and control facilities, as well as sites for producing and storing advanced conventional weapons, including missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
CENTCOM stated that the Houthis use these facilities to launch attacks on warships and commercial vessels in the southern Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. Additionally, the U.S. reported destroying a coastal radar site, along with seven cruise missiles and suicide drones over the Red Sea.
