Cholera Cases in Yemen Rise to Over 260,000 in 2024, With 879 Deaths Reported
The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported that Yemen has the highest number of cholera cases among the countries included in their report. In 2024, the country recorded over 260,000 cholera cases and 879 related deaths. According to the WHO’s report, from January 1 to December 29, 2024, there were 260,552 cases of cholera and 879 deaths. In December alone, 10,502 new cases were reported, along with 16 deaths.

The report highlighted that the most affected regions include Al Hudaydah, Hajjah, Amran, and Taiz, while areas like Shabwa, Hadramout, Al-Mahrah, and Socotra recorded fewer cases. Globally, Yemen had the highest number of cholera and acute watery diarrhea (AWD) cases among 34 countries surveyed. Worldwide, a total of 804,721 cholera and AWD cases were reported, with 5,805 deaths

The WHO noted that ongoing conflicts, mass displacement, natural disasters, and climate change have exacerbated the disease's spread. Poor infrastructure and limited access to healthcare have delayed treatment, particularly in rural areas, facilitating further disease transmission. These cross-border challenges have made it increasingly difficult to control the cholera outbreak in the affected regions.
