Islamophobic Iraqi Refugee Selwan Momiqa Shot Dead in Sweden
Swedish police confirmed on Thursday that Iraqi refugee Selwan Momiqa, 38, was shot dead in his apartment near Stockholm, following his controversial acts of burning and repeatedly desecrating the Quran, which sparked outrage across the Islamic world.
According to Swedish authorities, Momiqa was shot late last night in his home in Södertälje, located about 35 kilometers south of Stockholm. Local media reported that Momiqa was live-streaming on the social media platform "TikTok" when he was shot. Video footage showed police officers confiscating his phone and ending the live broadcast.
The Swedish police have arrested five suspects in connection with the death of the "Quran desecrator." The murder occurred just hours before a verdict was due to be issued regarding Momiqa’s trial for the 2023 Quran-burning incident. Momiqa faced charges of inciting hatred against an ethnic group.
In February of last year, the Swedish Migration Court approved Momiqa's deportation from the country. However, in March 2023, Momiqa claimed to have left Sweden for Norway, where he sought asylum.
