Environmental Disaster Looms in Red Sea as U.S. Blames Houthis for Sinking Ship Carrying Ammonium Nitrate
The United States on Sunday warned of a major environmental catastrophe in the Red Sea, accusing Houthi militants of deliberately sinking the cargo vessel "Magic Seas" which was carrying 17,000 metric tons of ammonium nitrate.
In a statement posted on X, the U.S. Embassy in Yemen said the chemical spill threatens to disrupt fish reproduction cycles and may cause a mass extinction of marine life in the region’s ecosystem.
The embassy described the attack as intentional, blaming the Houthis for endangering civilian lives, livelihoods, and regional commerce.
UK Condemns the Attack, Demands Crew Release
The British Embassy in Yemen also condemned the unprovoked Houthi attacks on the Greek-owned cargo vessels Magic Seas and Eternity C, which resulted in at least four deaths, with several other crew members still missing.
The UK called on the Houthis to immediately and unconditionally release all detained crew members of Eternity C, and to cease actions that threaten civilian lives and international maritime trade.
The Houthis previously claimed responsibility for targeting the ships, alleging they were en route to Israeli ports. Both ships were flying the Liberian flag and operated by Greek companies.
