Tensions in Socotra Island: Armed African Fighters Arrive as Zubeydi Visits
According to exclusive sources reported by "Al-Mahriya Net," more than 100 African armed fighters have arrived on Socotra Island, where they have been stationed in a camp prepared by the United Arab Emirates. This development comes just after the visit of Eidros Zubeydi, the head of the Southern Transitional Council, to the Socotra archipelago.
The sources revealed that the fighters were transported from various Somali regions as the first batch to the island, sparking security concerns among the local residents.
Earlier, local sources had warned about external interference in Abd al-Kuri Island, suggesting that it could lead to conflict, particularly around the islands of Abd al-Kuri and
Zubeydi's current visit is centered around approving a set of agreements signed by Socotra's governor, Raft al-Tukhali, who is aligned with the Transitional Council, with the UAE. These agreements include the transfer of the airport, port, and control over Abd al-Kuri and Semha Islands, as well as mining sites. These agreements were signed without the knowledge of the Yemeni government, causing significant political controversy.
The sources also confirmed that Zubeydi and his deputies were moved to a UAE military base away from the capital, Hadiybo, following chaos that erupted around their initial accommodation at the Summerland Hotel. Additionally, security forces in Socotra have imposed what seems like a curfew on the city, with protests expected to coincide with Zubeydi's presence. Zubeydi was transferred to a UAE military base near Hulaf Port, east of Hadiybo.
