Grundberg urges urgent economic action in Aden, demands Houthis release all arbitrarily detained individuals
UN Special Envoy to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, has called for immediate economic measures in Aden, including the full and regular payment of salaries and efforts to stimulate the economy. He also demanded the unconditional release of all individuals arbitrarily detained by the Houthi militia, especially UN staff and civil society workers.
In his briefing to the UN Security Council, Grundberg emphasized the need for the Yemeni government to resume oil and gas exports, which have been halted due to previous Houthi attacks on export facilities. He said his recent discussions with the Yemeni Prime Minister focused on improving citizens' livelihoods and boosting essential services.
Grundberg welcomed the reopening of the Al-Dhalea road, calling it a positive step that reflects what is possible on the ground. He urged for a nationwide ceasefire, paving the way for political negotiations and wider regional and international coordination on maritime security in the Red Sea.
He reiterated his call for the immediate and unconditional release of detainees held by the Houthis, warning of deteriorating health conditions among those in captivity.
