Yemen Government Urges the United States to Increase Pressure on Houthi Leaders to Force Peace
The Yemeni government has called on the United States to increase pressure on the Houthi militia and target its leaders to force them into peace negotiations.
This request was made during meetings held by Yemen's Ambassador to Washington, Mohamed Al-Hadrami, with U.S. Senators Ted Cruz and Tom Tillis in separate meetings on Wednesday, January 28, according to the Yemeni embassy’s official X platform account.
In his meeting with Senator Cruz, Ambassador Al-Hadrami thanked the senator for his strong stance and for classifying the Iran-backed Houthi militia as a Foreign Terrorist Organization. Al-Hadrami emphasized the need to escalate pressure on the Houthis and support the legitimate Yemeni government in liberating Hodeidah, while also targeting Houthi leaders to force them into peace talks.
In another meeting with Senator Tom Tillis, Al-Hadrami expressed gratitude for Tillis' support in labeling the Houthis as a Foreign Terrorist Organization. Al-Hadrami stressed the importance of providing political, economic, and military support to the Yemeni government, as well as increasing pressure on Iran and its proxies, particularly the Houthi militia, to bring peace to Yemen
Last week, the United States reclassified the Iran-backed Houthi militia as a Foreign Terrorist Organization by an executive order from President Trump.
In December, Ambassador Al-Hadrami proposed three measures to the U.S. Senate to address the threats posed by the Houthi militia. These measures included designating the Houthis as a Foreign Terrorist Organization, supporting the Yemeni government in liberating Hodeidah, and targeting Houthi leaders.
