UAE Refuses to Extradite Yaseran Hamza Almaktri, Yemen Government Faces Setback
Sources within the Yemeni government have revealed that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has refused to extradite Yaseran Hamza Almaktri, the former head of the so-called "Counter-Terrorism Unit" in Aden, who is accused of committing criminal offenses, including the abduction of Colonel Ali Ishal Al-Jadani.
Almaktri had renewed his passport at the Yemeni embassy in Abu Dhabi at the beginning of last week, prompting the embassy to notify the government in Aden.
In response, Yemen's Minister of Interior, Major General Ibrahim Hidan, made an official request to the UAE authorities for the extradition of Almaktri. However, the UAE's response was a firm rejection.
In another development, sources have reported that several fugitives wanted for trial in terrorism and assassination cases have sought refuge on Yemen's Socotra Island, which is under UAE control.
Eyewitnesses mentioned that a known suspect, Shaif Ali Shaif Al-Warai from the Hadrbo region of Radfan, was spotted in Hadiybo, the capital of Socotra. Al-Warai is listed in investigations related to assassination crimes in Aden and Daleh.
The sources further indicated that other fugitives are present on the island, receiving the necessary support to live, all under the protection of the local authorities there.
