Tensions Soar in Mahra: Senior Houthi Leader Al-Zaidi Arrested at Border, Tribes Demand Release
A major political and tribal crisis is unfolding in Yemen’s eastern Mahra governorate following the arrest of senior Houthi figure Mohammed Ahmed Ali Al-Zaidi at the Sarfeet border crossing with Oman.
Security forces apprehended Al-Zaidi at dawn on Tuesday as he attempted to flee the country using a diplomatic passport issued by the Houthi authorities in Sana’a. He was reportedly in possession of sensitive documents and electronic devices, suggesting he was on a covert mission.
Shortly after his arrest, armed Houthi-affiliated elements launched an attack on government forces, triggering violent clashes. The confrontation resulted in the death of Colonel Abdullah Zaid, commander of a tank battalion in the 137th Infantry Brigade, and injuries to two other soldiers.
The incident has sparked tribal uproar, with some influential sheikhs calling for Al-Zaidi’s release, citing his social status. However, other tribal and civil leaders condemned any compromise on national security, insisting that state authority must not be undermined.
The Mahra Security Committee confirmed that Al-Zaidi remains in custody and that legal proceedings are underway.
