U.S. Calls for End of Hodeidah Mission: Stockholm Agreement on the Brink Amid Escalating Houthi Threat
In a pivotal shift in its Yemen policy, the United States has called on the United Nations Security Council to terminate the United Nations Mission to Support the Hodeidah Agreement (UNMHA), citing the mission’s ineffectiveness and overreach. Washington stated that the mission continues to oversee activities that have been suspended for years, and it is time for its mandate to end.

The American demand comes amid rising regional tensions following a Houthi attack that sank two ships in the Red Sea, resulting in fatalities and missing crew members. Additionally, a recent UK investigation revealed that the Houthis have used the oil tanker "Yemen" to store Russian oil, with indirect support from the United Nations.

Observers say the U.S. move is not merely a rejection of a UN mechanism, but a de facto declaration of the Stockholm Agreement’s failure, signed in 2018. It also signals the beginning of a new phase in how Washington may respond to Houthi threats along Yemen’s western coastline, amid mounting criticism of the UN’s weak role and worsening maritime security in the Red Sea.
