US Deploys B-2 Stealth Bombers in Yemen to Strike Houthi Underground Weapons Sites
The United States Air Force has used B-2 Spirit stealth bombers for the first time in Yemen, targeting underground weapons storage facilities controlled by Iranian-backed Houthi militants. This marks a significant development in the U.S. military campaign against the Houthis.
U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin stated that the strikes demonstrate America's capability to neutralize deeply buried and fortified targets. The airstrikes focused on five underground facilities located near the cities of Sanaa and Saada. These locations reportedly stored missiles and ammunition used in attacks on commercial and military vessels in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.
The B-2 Spirit is the only operational aircraft capable of carrying the GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP), a bomb weighing approximately 13,600 kg and capable of penetrating up to 61 meters of reinforced concrete. According to U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), the strikes did not result in any civilian casualties.
This operation was conducted in response to a series of Houthi attacks on maritime traffic in the Red Sea. In recent months, Houthi forces have launched several assaults on international shipping. The U.S. views this mission as part of a broader effort to ensure regional stability and protect key global trade routes.
