Israeli Chief of Staff Resigns After October 7 Failure: A Wave of Military Leadership Resignations

Israeli Chief of Staff, Herzi Halevi, announced his resignation following what is considered a failure on October 7, 2023. His resignation marks the beginning of a series of departures from the Israeli military leadership.

Halevi’s resignation will take effect on March 6, 2024. In his resignation letter, Halevi stated, "The Israeli military failed in its defense mission, and the country paid a heavy price," adding that he takes full responsibility for the failure on October 7, 2023. He remarked, "The responsibility of this dreadful failure accompanies me every day and hour."

Halevi acknowledged the significant human losses, stating, "We suffered great casualties, and the war left deep wounds among many of our soldiers and their families." However, he also emphasized, "The military fought a prolonged war on multiple fronts and achieved accomplishments that changed the face of the Middle East."

Following Halevi's resignation, Israeli Southern Command leader, Yaron Finkelman, also announced his resignation. In his resignation letter, Finkelman admitted, "I failed to protect the western Negev on October 7." He added, "The failure of October 7 will be etched in my life forever."

Israeli Channel 13 reported that these resignations are part of a broader wave of departures within the Israeli military leadership following the events of October 7.
