Houthis Ban Graduation Ceremonies and Tighten Ideological Control in Universities
The Houthi authorities in Yemen's capital, Sanaa, have issued a sweeping ban on all graduation ceremonies at public and private universities within areas under their control. According to an official document dated May 25, signed by Houthi Higher Education Minister Abdullah al-Saadi, no graduation event may be held on or off campus without prior ministry approval.
In a separate directive, the minister also ordered that only instructors approved by Houthi authorities are permitted to teach key ideological subjects such as "Islamic Culture," "National Culture," and the "Arab-Israeli Conflict."
Since seizing control of Sanaa in 2015, the Houthis have imposed a series of restrictions on academic life, introducing groups like the "University Student Forum" and the "Houthi Graduates Club" to monitor campus activities. Educators and students say the policies undermine academic freedom and aim to indoctrinate rather than educate.
